Microsoft's top brass will hold a teleconference on Thursday morning to make a "significant company announcement" that is unrelated to the takeover attempt of Yahoo.

A media alert sent on Thursday said that CEO Steve Ballmer, Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, Senior Vice President of Server and Tools Business Bob Muglia, and General Counsel for Legal and Corporate Affairs Brad Smith will be on the call.

The company did not specify the content of the announcement except to say that it is not related to its proposed multibillion-dollar acquisition of rival Yahoo.

Microsoft's top executives are set to announce a broad interoperability strategy that includes an agreement not to sue open source companies for products that connect to Microsoft software, a source familiar with the company's plans told CNET News.com.

The software maker had already taken baby steps in this direction, signing individual pacts with companies like Novell and Turbolinux as well as agreeing not to sue individual developers.

The company has scheduled a conference call at 8:30 a.m. PT Thursday to discuss the news. Among the executives on the call are CEO Steve Ballmer, Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie, Server and Tools head Bob Muglia and general counsel Brad Smith.
